There’s a new face in the Whoniverse, and fans are buzzing with excitement. The first teaser for the second season of Disney+ and the BBC’s Doctor Who introduces Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra, a bold new companion who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. In the teaser, she tells Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, “You need to get me home!”
he clip also hints at chaos, with spaceships and robots filling the scene as the Doctor exclaims, “What the hell is this?!” Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday, the Doctor’s previous companion, also makes a return, putting to rest rumors that she wouldn’t be back.
The upcoming season, set to air next year, promises thrilling adventures. According to the official synopsis, the Doctor meets Belinda Chandra and embarks on a journey to return her to Earth. However, an unknown force stands in their way, and the TARDIS crew will face even greater threats and terrifying challenges along the way.
This first look followed the release of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, titled Joy to the World. In the festive episode, Nicola Coughlan of Bridgerton fame stars as Joy, who finds herself in the middle of a dinosaur-filled adventure.
The story begins with Joy checking into a London hotel, only to stumble upon a hidden doorway to the mysterious Time Hotel. The synopsis teases danger, dinosaurs, and a looming plan threatening the entire planet. With human history on the line, it’s up to the Doctor to save Christmas in a typical time-traveling fashion.
Russell T. Davies continues as showrunner and executive producer for the series, with support from Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter. The show is produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC One.
In addition to the Christmas special, the teaser hints at high stakes for the upcoming season. The story seems to connect with last season’s exploration of the Pantheon of Discord and potentially ties into the mysterious Timeless Child narrative.
Meanwhile, Ruby Sunday’s return places her at UNIT with Kate Stewart, suggesting new dynamics for the Doctor’s companions. Despite stepping away from traveling with the Doctor at the end of her season, Ruby’s involvement with UNIT aligns with Russell T. Davies’ earlier promises of her comeback.
While Doctor Who hasn’t been officially renewed for a third season on Disney+, Davies has emphasized the show’s success with younger audiences, even as overall ratings remain modest. He recently wrapped production on the spin-off The War Between the Land and Sea, featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Russell Tovey, and George Robinson.
It’s shaping up to be an exciting chapter in the Whoniverse, with plenty of twists, turns, and familiar faces to keep fans hooked.
