The Toxic Avenger Remake Drops on Labor Day Weekend with Peter Dinklage Leading the Charge
Cineverse has locked in a 2025 release date for The Toxic Avenger, with Peter Dinklage taking on the role of Toxie. The film is set to hit theaters on August 29, lining up with Labor Day weekend.
The reboot, directed by Macon Blair, puts a fresh spin on the 1980s cult classic. The cast includes Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, and Taylour Paige, alongside Dinklage.
The movie was picked up by Cineverse after a deal with Legendary Entertainment, giving them full rights for theatrical, home entertainment, and streaming in the US and Canada.
The story follows Winston Gooze, a struggling janitor who is transformed into a mutant vigilante after a freak accident. Armed with his iconic mop, he takes on criminals, shady CEOs, and other villains while trying to protect his son.
The film mixes over-the-top action with corporate corruption and social injustice, staying true to the chaotic energy of the original but with a modern edge.
The Toxic Avenger made a splash at Fantastic Fest, where it was praised for its mix of dark humor, outrageous gore, and unexpected heart. It currently holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, proving that wild, rebellious cinema still has a place on the big screen.
Cineverse made headlines last year with Terrifier 3, and they’re betting big on The Toxic Avenger. The release date shuffle comes after Sony Pictures pushed back its latest Insidious movie to August 2026, clearing the way for Toxie to take over the holiday weekend.
