A dinner party in Los Angeles takes a wild turn in “The Uninvited,” a new film written and directed by Nadia Conners. Making her first narrative feature, Conners exposes the messy realities of life among Hollywood’s elite.

The movie, which debuted at SXSW 2024, stars Walton Goggins and Elisabeth Reaser as a married couple whose glamorous evening spirals into disorder. Foton Distribution has set the release for May 9, with early screenings at New York’s IFC Center on April 11 and Los Angeles’ Laemmle on April 18.

The story centers on Sammy, an agent played by Goggins, and his wife Rose, portrayed by Reaser. They host a party to charm Sammy’s important client, Gerald, acted by Rufus Sewell. But their plans unravel when two unexpected guests arrive.

First, an elderly woman named Helen, played by Lois Smith, wanders in, insisting the house is hers. Then, Rose’s ex-lover Lucien, brought to life by Pedro Pascal, shows up, stirring up old tensions. As the night progresses, hidden truths come out, and the group faces a mix of comedy and crisis.

The film’s trailer, recently released, highlights the growing chaos. It starts with Sammy and Rose preparing for their guests, only to be thrown off by Helen’s arrival. While the situation seems funny at first, it soon deepens.

Rose begins reflecting on her late mother, sparked by Helen’s presence. Meanwhile, Sammy and Rose’s strained marriage comes into focus, and Lucien’s charm adds more friction. The trailer blends humor with heavier moments, showing how the couple’s frustration turns into unexpected care for Helen.

“The Uninvited” has earned strong praise early on. With just seven reviews so far, it holds a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant’s Mae Abdulbaki gave it 7 out of 10, saying, “Conners is a confident director, bringing together a story that is personal while touching upon issues women face as they age with grace and care.”

The official synopsis captures the film’s edge: “Rose (Reaser) and her agent husband Sammy (Goggins) host a glamorous dinner to impress their big-shot client Gerald (Rufus Sewell), but the night derails when an elderly stranger (Lois Smith) and Rose’s ex, Hollywood charmer Lucien (Pascal), crash the scene. As drinks flow and secrets spill, ambition and identity clash in a sharp, unhinged look at a world obsessed with youth and fame.”

The cast brings star power to the project. Goggins, known for “The White Lotus” Season 3, is married to Conners in real life. Pascal, set to return in “The Last of Us” Season 2, plays the disruptive Lucien, described in the trailer as “famous for ripping apart relationships and [leaving] everyone in tatters.”

Alongside them are Eva De Dominici, Kate Comer, Annie Korzen, and Emma West. Ross Clarke, Carlos Cuscó, Rosie Fellner, and Ariel Taboada produced the film.

Conners uses the story to poke fun at Hollywood’s obsession with youth and success. The arrival of Helen and Lucien forces the characters to confront their ambitions and personal struggles. What starts as a polished evening ends in a raw look at identity and relationships, making “The Uninvited” a standout debut for Conners.
