A Little History

The Ultimates, unlike the Avengers, is not a part of regular continuity. The Avengers lie in Earth-616 and the Ultimates in Earth-1610.

In this version of the team, Nick Fury is at the helm of the International Peace Keeping Agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. While at the helm he is given the go-ahead by the President of the United States to assemble a task force that is to combat the growing number of Supervillains.

The initial team consisted of Hank and Janet Pym, Tony Stark. Thor was asked to join but he refused unless the government agreed to send more funds to the environmental issues that plagued the Earth. Bruce Banner was brought on to replicate the Super Soldier Serum and Betty Ross was appointed as the Director of Communications. Finally, the frozen body of Captain America is found in the Arctic and revived.

In its early form, the team unsuccessfully attempts to gain notoriety. This failure causes the President to consider pulling their funding. So as to prevent this from happening, Bruce injects himself with a combination of the Super Soldier Serum and the formula that transforms him into the Hulk. This combination turns him into a much more lethal, powerful and out of control Hulk. As a by-product, he goes on a rampage.

The Ultimate arrive to subdue the creature and along with the help of Thor, are able to do so. At battles end, the Wasp flies into his brain and electrocutes him from the inside. The electrocution causes the Hulk to revert back to Bruce Banner and as a consequence, The Ultimates gain instant fame.

This, of course, is only the beginning.
