The highly anticipated horror film Wolf Man, directed by Leigh Whannell, is set to hit theaters on January 17, 2025, marking the seventh installment in Universal’s Wolf Man franchise.
Starring Christopher Abbott as the lead character Blake, the film explores a chilling transformation that redefines the classic werewolf narrative. A recently released clip offers audiences the most detailed glimpse yet of this reimagined monster.
The story follows Blake, a family man who moves from San Francisco to rural Oregon with his wife Charlotte (played by Emmy winner Julia Garner) and their daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth). They relocate to Blake’s childhood home after inheriting the property, left vacant following his father’s mysterious disappearance.
The suspense begins when, on a moonlit night, the family is attacked by a werewolf. Although they manage to barricade themselves inside, Blake is clawed during the encounter, setting off his horrifying transformation.
The new footage captures this transformation in graphic detail, showcasing Blake’s body contorting and reshaping in ways that are both terrifying and mesmerizing. His bones crack, his jaw snaps into place, and his hands elongate, leaving him as a human-animal hybrid. The clip also hints at the emotional tension in the story, with Blake’s family witnessing his monstrous change and struggling to survive.
Director Leigh Whannell, known for modern horror hits like The Invisible Man, aimed to create a fresh take on the werewolf genre. Drawing inspiration from iconic portrayals such as Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight, Whannell sought to balance respect for the classic monster with an innovative design.
In an interview, he explained how he reviewed werewolf depictions from films like American Werewolf in London and The Howling before deciding to push the character in a bold new direction. This version of the Wolf Man is notably less hairy, offering a stripped-down, visceral appearance that sets it apart from its predecessors.
While the transformation scene has generated excitement, the monster’s design has sparked mixed reactions online. Some fans have praised the unique approach, while others long for a more traditional wolf-like appearance.
Comparisons to the 2010 remake starring Benicio del Toro are common, with some viewers arguing that the earlier film’s design remains unmatched. Despite the debate, Whannell has reassured audiences that the final product will deliver a compelling and terrifying experience.
The supporting cast includes Sam Jaeger, Ben Prendergast, and Benedict Hardie, with Whannell co-writing the screenplay alongside Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Rebecca Angelo. The film is produced by Blumhouse, with Jason Blum leading the production team and Ryan Gosling among the executive producers.
Wolf Man promises a gripping mix of family drama and horror, as Charlotte faces a harrowing decision: can she protect her family from the creature her husband has become? With Universal’s modern take on their iconic monster catalog, this reimagining of the Wolf Man could leave a lasting impression on the genre. Fans won’t have to wait long to find out, as the film is set to arrive in theaters in mid-January.
