The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) kicked off with Iron Man in 2008 and has since evolved into the largest single-narrative film series in history, as well as one of the most ambitious cinematic projects ever. While many hoped for its success, few could have predicted its monumental impact. Even though not all the films have been critically acclaimed, the MCU’s historical significance is undeniable.

Beyond its cultural impact, the MCU is also one of the most profitable franchises of all time. Despite recent financial challenges, the MCU has still raked in an astounding $30,972,214,952 at the global box office.

With that in mind, we’re presenting a list of all the MCU movies that have crossed the $1 billion mark—some of the titles might just surprise you!

11. Captain Marvel

The last film to hit the $1 billion milestone before the two major Avengers movies of the Infinity Saga was Captain Marvel, which took many by surprise. Led by Brie Larson, the film was enjoyable and introduced an intriguing new character, contributing to its success. Unfortunately, the series hasn’t aged as well as some might have hoped.

10. Spider-Man: Far From Home

The second Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland narrowly edged out Captain Marvel in terms of box office performance. While it was a solid movie, Tom Holland’s solo Spider-Man films struggled to capture the same excitement as Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s solo outings. This is likely due to their deep integration into the MCU, but the numbers were still impressive.

9. Deadpool & Wolverine

The first film to hit the $1 billion mark after Endgame and the only one still showing in theaters, it has the potential— as noted in our previous coverage—to climb to the eighth spot. We’ll have to wait and see if it achieves that. The movie capitalized on nostalgia and, while it was quite good, the MCU will need to reassess its strategy for future projects.

8. Captain America: Civil War

Now regarded as an MCU classic, this Captain America film essentially served as a prequel to the final Avengers movies, with minimal standalone elements. While the story was solid overall, fans were more captivated by the epic clashes rather than the relatively weak plot, which contributed to its success.

7. Iron Man 3

Iron Man was an iconic film, though its sequels didn’t quite match up. However, they still possessed enough appeal to be successful, so it’s no surprise that fans flocked to see Downey’s final solo Iron Man movie. It was released during the peak of the MCU’s popularity, where even the less favorable entries found an audience.

6. Black Panther

This film is now a true classic, introducing us to both a new character and a completely new setting. Wakanda has become one of the most beloved locations in the MCU. Although the film may not have been groundbreaking, its social and historical significance makes it highly understandable why fans embraced it so passionately.

5. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Despite being considered the “weakest” Avengers movie, it ranks as the fifth highest-grossing MCU film of all time, highlighting the enduring appeal of the Avengers brand. While the movie was essentially a rehash of the first installment with new characters, it was far from bad, and the backlash it faced after its release is puzzling. Fortunately, the box office numbers clearly reflect its success.

4. Marvel’s The Avengers

The first Avengers movie was a game-changer. It premiered as a landmark film, delivering on its promise and showcasing the potential of the MCU as a franchise. It marked the start of something extraordinary, so the box office success is entirely unsurprising.

3. Spider-Man: No Way Home

The second, and so far one of only two post-Endgame movies to surpass the $1 billion mark. The film itself was engaging, but it was the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield that truly propelled it past the milestone. While their return was thrilling, we’ve discussed how relying on nostalgia might pose challenges for Marvel in the future. Nevertheless, the financial success was substantial.

2. Avengers: Infinity War

The first part of the Infinity Saga’s concluding chapter, Infinity War, was a powerful and emotional lead-up to Endgame. While it had some symbolic elements and a few shortcomings in depth, it achieved tremendous success and represented the pinnacle of the MCU, both commercially and creatively. The impact speaks for itself.

1. Avengers: Endgame

That’s pretty much it—the pinnacle of the MCU. Even after five years, many believe the MCU can’t surpass the narrative and emotional depth of Endgame, and they’re likely correct. This film encapsulated everything the MCU had been and continues to be, achieving such excellence that it became the second highest-grossing movie of all time.
