Todd Phillips Says He’s “Done” With DC Following the Release of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ officially premieres today, but a significant number of fans had the opportunity to check it out at the Venice Film Festival, where the movie premiered a month ahead of its theater release.

The first reactions to the movie were not good at all. Even before the release, fans were not looking forward to Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn or the fact that the movie has been described as a “musical” despite Phillips claiming that it isn’t one (it is a musical by the way.)

The social media reactions are abysmal, and the movie’s RT score keeps plummeting, the movie is currently at a 39% approval rate when it comes to critics (it was at 48 % yesterday) and a 38% approval rate when it comes to fans.

Pair this with a low projected opening box office result, and you have a catastrophe on your hands, which is weird considering that the first movie did so well.

Check out some of these reviews:

If Folie à Deux were just a demented musical romance, it could’ve been something special in a small-scale, character-driven way. Alas, Phillips is somehow convinced that these Joker movies need to Say Something Important about the state of the world.

Todd Phillips has never managed to write a plausible female character. Why start now?

Wenlei Ma, The Nightly

There was little to no storyline, and more than half of the movie was singing, so it felt like I was watching a musical.

Awful do not see, every time it started to get good they would start singing

The likelihood of ‘Joker 2’ getting a sequel is nonexistent if the movie continues this trajectory. It ultimately doesn’t matter since Tod Phillips revealed that he is done with the DC universe.

Phillips was asked whether a solo movie focusing on Gaga’s Harley Quinn might be in the cards, and the director sharply debunked all rumors:

“It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films,”

As you can see ‘Joker 3’ is out of the question, however similar thing was claimed after the first movie as well. ‘Joker’ was initially designed as a standalone film, but Warner Bros. planned for it to kick off a DC Black film series.

Then Todd Phillips started showing interest in creating a sequel, which officially entered development in June 2022. Lady Gaga and Zazie Beetz joined the cast later that year. Principal photography for the sequel took place in New York City, Los Angeles, and Belleville, New Jersey, from December 2022 to April 2023.

And now we’re here, at a 39 % approval rate. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
