Hollywood’s bond with superhero movies is a complicated one, and Tom Hanks recently offered his take on how the genre has evolved and the unique challenges it faces.
While superhero films continue to dominate at the box office, the industry has encountered criticism and some notable setbacks. Marvel Studios, for instance, has seen mixed reviews for recent projects, while DC’s cinematic universe seems to be losing momentum.
Sony, too, has struggled despite occasional hits like Venom, which stood out by reimagining the genre as a darkly humorous buddy comedy.
In a recent conversation, Hanks highlighted how today’s advanced visual effects allow filmmakers to bring comic book action to life with unprecedented realism, making almost any scenario possible on screen.
Reflecting on earlier adaptations like the superhero TV shows of the 1970s and 80s, Hanks noted that technical constraints back then made it difficult to fully capture the genre’s essence.
Today’s technology can finally deliver on the promise of comic book worlds—a journey that began with groundbreaking adaptations like Christopher Reeve’s Superman.
According to Hanks, while visual effects have advanced dramatically, audiences now expect more from storytelling. He offered a colorful analogy: “You could drain Lake Michigan, fill it with cuckoo clocks, and summon a three-headed dragon breathing fire over Chicago. But, in the end, what’s the point? What’s the story? What does it say about us?”
Hanks suggests that while superhero spectacles can be thrilling, the real challenge is creating stories that resonate and carry meaningful messages. The focus has shifted from simply showcasing powerful heroes to exploring more layered and relevant narratives.
When asked if he’d been in talks with Marvel’s Kevin Feige or DC’s James Gunn, Hanks confirmed he hasn’t met with either.
Hanks mentioned that his schedule is already packed with his own projects and creative pursuits, suggesting that joining a superhero film isn’t on his radar at the moment.

As the industry evolves, Marvel and DC are pushing into new territory with projects like The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Agatha All Along, aiming to satisfy audiences’ growing appetite for meaningful stories alongside stunning visuals.
Hanks’ remarks highlight a broader challenge in Hollywood: raising the bar on storytelling to match the impressive visual technology now available to filmmakers.
