It’s no secret that superhero movies come with huge price tags, often due to high salaries for actors, directors, writers, and especially the extensive CGI. But here’s something that might surprise you: some of the highest costs go into the physical costumes worn by your favorite heroes!
While many costumes today are enhanced or even entirely created with CGI, several are meticulously crafted in real life—and they come with staggering price tags.
To give you a glimpse into this fascinating side of superhero filmmaking, we’ve put together a list of the ten most expensive superhero costumes ever made. From 10th to 1st place, each suit includes its confirmed cost and a few insights into what makes it so valuable.
10. Wolverine’s brown suit from Deadpool & Wolverine – $100,000
Yes, the one in the photo above! This alternate Wolverine suit, seen briefly in the film, definitely looks epic—but what’s even more jaw-dropping is that it reportedly cost an astounding $100,000 to create. Whether or not it was the priciest suit on set remains unclear, but if it wasn’t, we can only imagine how much the top contender cost!
9. Ben Affleck’s SnyderVerse Batman suit – $100,000
The Batfleck suit was nothing short of epic and resonated strongly with fans. It captured the essence of the character, complementing both Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman and the world envisioned by Zack Snyder. While the $100,000 price tag for this suit seems fairly reasonable, Affleck later remarked that he felt the cost was somewhat excessive in relation to the final product overall.
8. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man suit from Far From Home – $130,000
Regardless of your opinions on the Holland era, particularly in comparison to the previous series, one thing is undeniable—the suit was epic. The version showcased in Far From Home was remarkable, both in design and how well it suited Holland. While $130,000 is a significant sum for a single costume, it was completely justified and absolutely worth it.
7. Star Lord’s mask from the MCU – $160,000
The mask? Seriously? While the overall costume was quite basic, even with the addition of the guns and the mask, it shouldn’t command a price of $160,000—and it likely didn’t. However, that was the auction price the mask fetched, making it the highest-priced item among 600 sold that day. It must have been a dedicated Marvel enthusiast who was willing to spend that much on the mask!
6. Henry Cavill’s Dark Superman suit from Zack Snyder’s Justice League – $200,000
Ah, the legendary Black Suit that didn’t make it into the theatrical release but finally appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Fans absolutely adored this suit, and Henry Cavill wore it exceptionally well, which explains its hefty price tag. Although we don’t have the exact production cost, it was auctioned off for an impressive $200,000—so that certainly says something!
5. Chris Evans’ original Captain America suit from The First Avenger – $228,000
In contrast to some of the other costumes on this list, this one truly stands out for its elaborate design. Although Steve’s costume underwent changes later on, the iconic suit from The First Avenger has become a significant piece of cinematic history, making it easy to understand why someone would pay a premium for it.
The suit reportedly sold for an astonishing $228,000 at auction, surpassing the initial estimates from those involved. We’re not surprised at all!
4. Christian Bale’s Batman suit from The Dark Knight – $250,000
Would you want The Dark Knight suit? Absolutely! Who wouldn’t? We imagine it was complicated to create and came with a hefty price tag, but the figure we’re sharing reflects its auction price. Given the other prices on this list, if you have the funds to spend that much, $250,000 for such a significant piece of history seems like a great deal from our perspective.
3. Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther suit – $300,000
It’s easy to see why this intricate, elaborate suit came with such a high price tag. This figure reflects the actual cost of the costume, not just an auction price. Its complexity explains the steep cost, which is also why only six of these costumes were made for the set—totaling $1.8 million!
The director had hoped to have 20 on hand, but just imagine spending $6 million on those alone…
2. Robert Downey Jr’s original Crimson/Gold Iron Man suit – $325,000
Downey donned several suits throughout his appearances, but the original gold and crimson comic book-accurate suit remains the most iconic, without question. Reports indicate that it was stolen from a storage unit in Los Angeles where it was kept. The police report estimated its value at around $325,000, an impressive figure that seems quite plausible.
1. The Shazam family suits – $1,000,000
To be honest, we initially thought this was a joke. The suit is simpler than any other on this list, and the movie hardly seems worth such a large investment in what’s essentially a “spandex suit with a cape.”
However, the costume designer disclosed that each of the costumes for the “family” cost “upwards of a million.” While Director Sandberg couldn’t confirm or deny this, it’s possible that this figure is closer to reality than we might think. Jinkies…!
