Favreau and Filoni had completed writing the fourth season of ‘The Mandalorian’ by February 2023, but production was delayed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. During this period, Lucasfilm chose to prioritize a Mandalorian film instead of the season. The film was announced in January 2024 and began filming in California by August 2024.

Not much is known about the plot so far but the official description of the movie states: “The Mandalorian, a lone bounty hunter, is tasked with capturing Grogu, a mysterious and adorable creature. Instead, he forms a strong bond with Grogu and strives to protect him from various threats, exploring his evolving purpose in a post-Empire galaxy.

During this year’s D23 event, the movie has gotten several important updates, including an exclusive teaser trailer that was shown to the audience. The video eventually made its way online and you can check it out below:

Footage featured Mando and Grogu touching fingers, with Mando’s voice-over mentioning his selective approach to assignments. The clip also showcased Babu Frick flying a ship with Grogu, a snowy planet reminiscent of Hoth with large AT-ATs, and Zeb from ‘Star Wars: Rebels,’ generating excitement among the audience.

A new logo for the film was also revealed. Principal photography for the film, under the working title ‘Thunder Alley,’ was initially set to begin in June 2024 in California, with an expected duration of 92 days. The production will include about 54 cast members, 3,500 background extras, and 500 crew members. By early August, Favreau and Filoni announced that filming had already started a few weeks prior. The film will feature the Anzellan species from ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ and ‘The Mandalorian’s’ third season, and a new version of the Razor Crest, the Mandalorian’s ship, which was destroyed in the show’s second season.

The movie is expected to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
