‘Vought Rising’ Spin-Off Initially Rejected by Amazon Now Expected To Be a Major Hit

The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series globally, with its fourth season concluding on July 18, 2024. The season received a Certified Fresh rating, and its viewership numbers confirmed its success, even surpassing Season 3 despite some controversial fan reactions.

While the season has wrapped up, the The Boys franchise is set to expand with several new projects on the horizon. One of these is the upcoming prequel spin-off series Vought Rising, which will explore the origins of Vought International and bring back Aya Cash’s Stormfront and Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy.

During a recent media session at San Diego Comic-Con—the event where the series was first announced—The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, who oversees the entire fictional universe, shared additional insights about the production history of the prequel and his plans for the series.

If you missed our earlier updates, Vought Rising will be a prequel series delving into the origins of Vought. Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash are set to reprise their roles as Soldier Boy and Stormfront, respectively. Paul Grellong will serve as the showrunner and has provided the following details about the series:

“We are excited to bring you the next deranged series from the world of ‘The Boys.’ It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought. We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V.”

As you can see, this promises to be a thrilling new perspective on the fictional universe and its familiar characters. At SDCC, Kripke shared that he had sent the pilot script to Garth Ennis, who responded, “Out of everything you guys have done, this one’s my favorite.” The showrunner also expressed his enthusiasm for the series and revealed that it was initially rejected by Amazon.

“In 2020, I went to Amazon to pitch them two spin-offs. One was Gen V, and one was Vought Rising. They bought Gen V and said, depending on how it goes, we’ll do Vought Rising too. It just makes so much sense to me because The Boys, at its heart, is a film noir cops-and-robbers story. If you ask [comic co-creator] Garth Ennis what inspired The Boys, he says James Ellroy novels. To go back to the source and do L.A. Confidential with superheroes with fedoras and trenchcoats makes so much sense to me. It’s so visual and cool.”

And there you have it. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story, so stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming prequel series.
