Warner Bros. Is Working on a New ‘Goonies’ Movie
‘The Goonies’ is a popular 1985 adventure comedy film directed by Richard Donner, with a story by Steven Spielberg. It follows a group of kids from a neighborhood in Astoria, Oregon, who try to save their homes from being taken by a bank. During their adventure, they find a treasure map leading to the fortune of a pirate named One-Eyed Willy, but they are chased by criminals who also want the treasure.
The movie has since become a cult classic and left a lasting legacy, and now apparently the franchise is bound to expand as Deadline reports.
Details about the new ‘Goonies’ film—whether it’s a sequel, reboot, or prequel—remain sparse. However, its inclusion signals Warner Bros.’ intent to capitalize on nostalgia-driven franchises alongside their auteur-led slate.
Over the years, there have been many talks about a ‘Goonies’ sequel, but it never really happened. Richard Donner, the director, had a story in mind and Steven Spielberg supported it, but Warner Bros. wasn’t interested in making it.
In 2007, Sean Astin was hopeful about a sequel, but Donner expressed doubt because many of the original cast members weren’t keen on returning. Corey Feldman also confirmed in 2008 that a sequel was not happening. However, in 2010, Donner said that a sequel was still a possibility, and in 2014, he revealed it was in the works and hoped to bring back the original cast.
Despite several ideas being discussed over the years, including talks about a sequel, Spielberg mentioned in 2020 that the plans for it had not been successful. In 2021, Feldman said the chance for a sequel was “dead” due to Donner’s decision to retire and the cast’s reluctance to continue without him. Sadly, Donner passed away in July 2021, which made the possibility of a sequel even more unlikely.
There were also talks of adaptations in other forms of media. In 2007, rumors surfaced about a ‘Goonies’ comic, an animated series, and even a musical. The animated series was planned with the original cast’s characters as adults, but it was eventually canceled. A ‘Goonies’ musical was also being considered, but it was never fully developed.
In 2020, a TV drama series about a woman helping students remake ‘The Goonies’ was ordered, but it was canceled in 2021 by Fox. Later, Disney+ decided to develop a new version of the series, titled ‘Our Time.’ However, the ‘Goonies’ sequel many hoped for never materialized.
