Was Thanos Right About Tony Stark? New Doctor Doom Theory Says Yes!

One of the hottest topics in entertainment news right now is Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel made quite an impact at San Diego Comic-Con, and with this major revelation, everyone is buzzing about Downey and the MCU’s future, which now looks more thrilling than ever, giving fans plenty to anticipate.

Originally, Marvel planned for Kang the Conqueror, portrayed by Jonathan Majors, to be the next big villain in the MCU, leading to an epic showdown in Secret Wars. However, following Majors’ domestic abuse scandal, the studio reconsidered his role. Instead of recasting Kang, Marvel chose to shift focus entirely and bring in Doctor Doom.

Casting Downey as Doctor Doom was a bold move, but one that could pay off if done right—and knowing Downey, he wouldn’t have signed on for anything less than top-notch. That said, the details are still scarce, leaving much room for speculation. One intriguing theory even suggests that Thanos may have been right all along in his confrontation with Tony Stark.

Before we dive in, let’s recall a famous line from Thanos in Infinity War during his direct confrontation with Stark:

Over the years, many fans have come to believe that Thanos was at least partially right, with the MCU’s storyline suggesting he had a point about certain things. Whether the writers had planned this all along is uncertain (likely not, as Downey’s casting was reportedly an improvised decision at the time), but it now seems possible that Thanos’ words were actually foreshadowing future events.

According to a theory by ScreenRant’s Karlis Wilde, Thanos may have known what was coming even back then. The theory suggests that Doctor Doom could be a variant of Tony Stark from an alternate universe, and Thanos, aware of this, hinted at Stark’s eventual turn to villainy in his remarks.

If Doctor Doom is a Tony Stark variant, as he is theorized to be in the MCU, it is certain that he, too, will be cursed with that knowledge. Relatable villains who have believable and understandable goals are integral to Marvel storytelling, and the knowledge and insight that Tony Stark possessed has served as a blessing and a curse in the MCU. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man nearly destroyed the world with that knowledge. As such, it would be compelling to see how that knowledge resonates with a version of the character who is more amenable to destruction.

While it’s uncertain whether Doctor Doom will ultimately be revealed as a Tony Stark variant, the theory is definitely intriguing.
