Wesley Snipes Beats Hugh Jackman’s Marvel Record, but Does It Really Count?

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the most recent installment in the MCU franchise. The movie introduced X-Men to the MCU as well as two notable characters, Deadpool and Wolverine. When it was first announced that Jackman would return to reprise his role, fans were elated, especially considering that the actor formally retired from the role following the character’s death in ‘Logan.’

As Wade joked in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Jackman will ultimately play the role until he is 90 considering that a fitting replacement in the eyes of many fans still hasn’t been found. Jackman has been playing the role of Wolverine for 24 years up to this point, since the release of ‘X-Men’ in 2000, and many consider him to have the longest career as a live-action Marvel character.

This isn’t exactly the case, and once again it’s due to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ One insane cameo in the movie has left the fans shocked as Wesley Snipes decided to reprise his role as the most notable vampire hunter in fiction overall – Blade. The actor currently has the longest career as a live-action Marvel character as it lasted 25 years and 340 days taking into account that the first ‘Blade’ movie was released in 1998.

Snipes’s surprise cameo set a record for the longest gap between appearances in Marvel films, with a 19-year and 231-day gap since he last played Blade in ‘Blade: Trinity’ (2004). This surpassed Alfred Molina’s previous record of 17 years between his roles as Doctor Octopus in ‘Spider-Man 2’ (2004) and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021).

Due to this gap, plenty of fans consider that Snipes’ “tenure” doesn’t really count since Jackman ultimately played the role more often.

MCU does have plans in the future for Blade, but it’s questionable whether Snipes will be involved with it considering that Mahershala Ali has already taken over the MCU role of the titular character. The actor recently revealed that in the past, there were attempts to resurrect the character, but they ultimately led nowhere until ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’:

I thought it didn’t make sense to me, but [when] you get a call from Ryan Reynolds out of the blue after 20 years, you go, ‘Okay, I got to take this call. Let’s see what this is about.” He told me the idea… They said ‘yes’ and ‘it’s a go.’ ‘If you’re in, we’re in.’ Here we are.
