‘What If…?’ Season 3: Director’s Wish for Wolverine Cameo Left Unfulfilled: “I think we were kicking ourselves”

‘What If…?’ Season 3 is airing its final episodes. Eight episodes are coming out over eight days, just like last year. Many popular characters are back, played by the same actors from the MCU. This includes Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector/Moon Knight, Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, and more.
A new character this season is Storm. The creators said that if they knew X-Men characters were available, they would have made them a bigger part of the story.
In an interview with ‘Agents of Fandom,’ Season 3 director Bryan Andrews said he would have liked to include Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine if he had known Disney owned the rights. However, it was too late to add him by then.
Andrews looked back and wished they could have included more mutants in the season. They didn’t know Disney would get the rights to the Fox characters in time, so they missed the chance to include Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.
But he hopes future ‘What If…?’ seasons might feature more of these characters. At least they got to include Storm, which he thinks is great.
In hindsight, I think we were kicking ourselves because, you know, it takes a while to set these things up and do these things. But it’s like we could have done more mutants this season, oh my gosh what the heck, but because at the time we didn’t know that they’re (Disney) gonna have all the Fox stuff back, you know what I mean, so we could have had a Hugh Jackman thing and you know, but oh well.
Maybe, maybe there’ll be some (more What If…?) in the future and then we get to party with those guys. But at least we got Storm, that’s awesome.
Work on Season 3 of ‘What If…?’ started in July 2022. At the same time, A. C. Bradley shared that Season 2 was her last project at Marvel Studios. Later, they announced that Season 3 would be the final season.
Winderbaum said the show was ending because of bigger plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and that it was the right time to finish the story. He also said they might bring the show back in the future.
