The lightsaber is a weapon that is unique because it is the chosen weapon of a Jedi and is able to channel the powers of a Jedi or any other Force user. Of course, lightsabers come in different forms and colors, but they mostly come in different colors. The color of the lightsaber also depends on certain aspects, such as the choice of the Jedi or the way that the Jedi were able to attune with their Kyber crystal. So, in that regard, what is the rarest lightsaber color?

Black is the rarest lightsaber color in the world of Star Wars. For a while, the only known black lightsaber was the Darksaber, forged a thousand years ago and owned by a Mandalorian Jedi. However, the High Republic era revealed that at least one more Jedi had a black lightsaber.

Lightsabers come in different colors, and that much has always been true. But the one color we haven’t seen a lot was always black because of how unique this color is and how it probably doesn’t occur as often as some other colors. That is why we’ve only seen one black lightsaber in the shows and another black one in the books. Now, let’s look at why black is the rarest lightsaber color.

There are only two known black lightsabers

The history of Star Wars has had a lot of different Jedi that existed in the galaxy because the Jedi Order has been around for thousands of years.

As such, the story of the Jedi goes way back several millennia before the events of the Skywalker Saga. Of course, most of the characters we’ve seen existed during the Skywalker Saga as a whole. And that means we’ve also seen our fair share of lightsabers.

Lightsabers come in different forms, shapes, and colors. But while most lightsabers come with a standard look and size, they usually come in different colors. Blue and Green are the most common among the Jedi, and the dark side users almost always use red lightsabers. But other colors tend to be quite rare and unique as well. And the rarest lightsaber color we’ve seen so far is basically the sum of all colors.

That’s because black is the lightsaber color we rarely see in Star Wars. Fans following the Skywalker Saga and the many different movies and TV shows featured during this entire saga would understand that only one black lightsaber is ever featured on our screens. We are talking about the black lightsaber color.

The most prominent and the only black lightsaber that most fans know is the Darksaber. That’s because this is the only lightsaber we’ve seen on our screens as it was heavily featured in ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’ ‘Star Wars: Rebels,’ ‘The Mandalorian,’ and ‘The Book of Boba Fett.’ The Darksaber is a unique lightsaber with a single-edged blade shaped like a katana and a black blade that makes a sharp noise instead of the usual buzzing sound of lightsabers.

Created a thousand years ago by Tarre Vizsla, who was the first Mandalorian Jedi, the Darksaber ultimately became a symbol of power among the Mandalorians after Tarre’s death as it was passed down from one generation to another in House Vizsla.

The only way for anyone to become the rightful wielder of the Darksaber was to win it in combat, and some of the most prominent wielders include Darth Maul, Moff Gideon, Din Djarin, and Bo-Katan Kryze. However, it was crushed by Moff Gideon in ‘The Mandalorian,’ as we aren’t sure whether or not it was salvaged after the battle with the Imperial remnants.

Of course, the Darksaber, as unique as it is, is not the only black lightsaber. The fact that the Jedi Order goes back thousands of years ago makes it improbable for only one black lightsaber.

As such, during the era of the High Republic, at last, one more black lightsaber existed (see featured image above). Of course, the only other black lightsaber we’ve seen was the one during the High Republic era, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t more black lightsabers that existed during that era or any other era in the past.

This basically means that the black lightsaber color is simply the rarest out of all of the lightsaber colors because it hasn’t been featured a lot in the storylines of Star Wars. But the fact that there are two known black lightsabers means there were probably more of them in the past.

What is the best color for a lightsaber?

The thing about the color of the lightsaber is that there isn’t really one color that is better than the others. Those with rare lightsaber colors, such as black, white, and purple, might stand out in the Jedi Order. But the fact is that no one color is actually better because it all boils down to the preference of the Jedi.

Of course, we also know that the color of the lightsaber can sometimes be a choice on the part of the Jedi. We know in the ‘Star Wars Jedi’ video game series that Cal Kestis can choose the color of his lightsaber.

And he can choose all lightsaber colors featured in canon, except for black and red (which can only be used after finishing the game).

So, with that said, the choice of color doesn’t really matter because the Jedi can choose the best color for their lightsaber. It’s just that some other lightsaber colors, such as black, aren’t readily available for most Jedi because there might be a special way of achieving this lightsaber color.

What is the most powerful lightsaber color?

The color of the lightsaber’s blade doesn’t affect its power. Although some of the strongest Jedi tend to have unique lightsaber colors, such as Mace Windu, who was known as one of the best Jedi during the time of the old Jedi Order, this wasn’t really a factor in the strength of the Jedi.

That’s because Yoda, who we know was arguably the greatest Jedi of his time, used a green lightsaber, one of the most common lightsaber colors out there.

Of course, the blue lightsaber color has always been equated to the lightsaber of a hero, especially because Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker used blue lightsabers. But the color just didn’t matter in terms of the power of the lightsaber’s blade.

The color is simply a color, and it doesn’t change the lightsaber’s power. As such, even if the lightsaber is black, white, or any of the other unique colors, the color won’t really affect the lightsaber’s power because most lightsabers are just as strong as one another.

Some sabers may be “better” than others, depending on how their hilts are designed or how the design of the saber itself can suit the fighting style of the owner. For example, Count Dooku’s curved lightsaber hilt makes him a better duelist, but that doesn’t mean that his lightsaber is stronger than others. It really boils down to how the saber was designed and how the owner uses it instead of what the lightsaber color is.
