Like most iconic and older characters in Marvel Comics, Thor has plenty of alternate versions, ranging from horrific or humorous to extremely powerful. One such alternate version is Old King Thor, whose powers are multiversal in scale. Most characters receive power upgrades over time, getting progressively stronger as years pass by, but the Thor of the future really raised the bar. This is why we decided to analyze this version of Thor in a bit more detail. Now without further ado, let’s see who exactly is Old King Thor and how powerful he is.
Old King Thor is a future version of Thor that becomes the King of Asgard and assumes his father’s responsibilities and powers. Old King Thor is presumably one of the last divine beings in existence, and following his last stand against Gorr the God Butcher, Thor sacrificed himself to hold back the entropy that was fated to destroy the Universe. Old King Thor’s most notable ability is Thor-Force, his own version of Odin-Force.
Now that we’ve given you a brief answer, it’s time to analyze the character in a bit more detail. The Old King Thor and Thor of Earth-616 are not the same characters but rather two different ones from two different timelines. Thor is bound to one day assume his father’s mantle. How did Thor become the Old King Thor?
Thor was always bound to become the Old King Thor, but there is one specific event that allowed him to replace his father, Odin, as the All-Father of Asgard. Old King Thor is also known as All-Father Thor or simply King Thor for a very good reason, as he is the one that rules Asgard, or what’s left of it, in the future.
In ‘War of the Realms’ #6, Thor sacrifices his eye to defeat Malekith the Accursed, and with that act, he becomes the All-Father of Asgard. However, in ‘Thor: God of Thunder’ #7 and ‘King Thor’ #1, there’s an alternate take on it, as the issue shows Thor putting Odin out of his misery due to his “old age” and burning him at the funeral pyre, assuming the mantle of the All-Father of Asgard and acquiring the Odin-Force, which he later aptly renamed into Thor-Force.
Later we will learn that Odin did not die merely of old age, but rather Loki has been poisoning him with his words in order to destroy Thor, Asgard, and basically everything in existence. Not even eons that passed could quell Loki’s jealousy of Thor and his insatiable drive to defeat him.
Before he assumed the mantle of All-Father, Thor acted as a god cop, bringing peace, justice, and order throughout the galaxy.
He also reincarnated into a planet during the 1000 Nights of Ragnarok.
Following his return to the humanoid body, Thor fathered Woden with the General of the Frost Giant army, which would eventually result in his three granddaughters being born, Frigg, Ellisiv, and Atli.
As All-Father Thor, Thor bound with Phoenix Force, managed to re-create both Asgard and Midgard and fought many dangers, including Loki and Gorr the God Butcher, yet again. He also took part in Wall of the Realms to defeat Malekith once and for all. His powers had no bounds, but it is implied that Thor is pretty much the only godly being left in the same Universe, and this brings us to the next story we have to tell you, the one on how Old King Thor ceased to exist, well, at least in his primary form.
What happened to Old King Thor?
Following his battle with Loki, and later with Gorr the God Butcher, Thor was forced to enter the Thor-Sleep, which allowed him to recuperate. Almost the entirety of the Universe was destroyed, leaving Midgard as the central point of creation. Gods ceased to exist in a conventional manner and were instead “forced to work in the dirt” as humans did.
Loki had to sacrifice himself to restart the sun, something that filled Thor with great melancholy every time he would see the sun shining above Midgard.
Even though life as we know it was restarted, there was something lurking at the bowels of the Universe, which was seemingly unstoppable, the entropy, the decay, the void that came for Thor’s latest creation.
Thor realized what he had to do and left Midgard in the care of his granddaughters, who assumed the mantle of “God of Thunder.” Old King Thor sacrificed himself to stop the entropy from devouring what’s left of the Universe.
How powerful is Old King Thor?
Old King Thor is by far one of the most powerful versions of Thor due to Thor-Force, a power he inherited from his father, Odin. Thor-Force makes Thor virtually omnipotent. With Thor-Force, Old King Thor counted himself among the most powerful beings in the entire Universe, and he was indestructible. It is unknown what the exact limits of Thor-Force are, but the power did allow him to save all creation from Gorr.
Thor-Force allowed him to manipulate all known forms of energy, travel through time, and manipulate it. It allowed him to alter life and spread it on a molecular level. He was able to resurrect and even grant powers. He was also able to perform existence erasure in severe cases.
Thor-Force is omnipotent, but it’s very rarely utilized to its full extent due to the fact that it leaves a great physical and mental toll on the person that tries to utilize it. Just like Odin, Thor was forced to enter Thor-Sleep at regular intervals to recharge himself following great battles.
It is unknown what happened to Thor-Force following Old King Thor’s death, but it’s most likely that the force itself is what keeps the entropy from spreading.
