Brie Larson is a successful and talented actress whose career peaked in 2015 when she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in the movie ‘Room.’ After that, she starred in a high-budget movie like ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ and her future looked promising. Even years before the ‘Captain Marvel‘ movie was released, fans debated and concluded that Brie would be perfect for the role. However, years later, the initial fans’ excitement faded and turned into less pleasant emotions. But let’s see why that is and why people hate Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.

People mostly hate Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel because of her comments during interviews that came out as sexist and racist, and her interaction with other colleagues during interviews was presented as strange and tense. Some fans think that the role got over Brie’s head and that she became arrogant.

This briefly summarizes the reasons why Brie is hated for her role as Captain Marvel. We’ll analyze these reasons in detail in the next few paragraphs, so keep reading to learn more about them!

Brie had no idea who Captain Marvel was before she took the role

It’s no secret that ‘Captain Marvel’ movie was one of the most anticipated movies in the franchise since it was the first one that featured a superheroine. Even before the movie was in the development phase, Marvel fans across the globe agreed that Brie Larson would be perfect for the role. When Brie was informed about that, she had no idea who Captain Marvel was and thought she would have to play a male character. But she was glad that fans wanted her for the role.

That kind of approval also comes with a certain responsibility and a burden of not letting the fans down. And this means not letting them down in any sense, not in interviews, not on set, not on the streets, and especially not in the movie. And somewhere along the line, minor mistakes started to pile up.

At first, Brie showed admirable dedication and discipline to get into the best shape possible for her role. She tried hard for nine months, lifting weights and learning various martial arts like judo, boxing, and wrestling.

‘Captain Marvel’ broke many records in its first week in theaters as the most successful movie with a woman in the main role. However, some of the fans were unsatisfied with Brie being cast for the main role, and it was mainly because, at the time, she was considered racist and sexist. It is open for debate if that is true or not.

All she did was comment on one of their speeches, stating that most movie critics were white men and that they should not be the main critics of movies where African-American culture is at the center, for example. You can watch the whole speech here if you are interested:

After ‘Captain Marvel’ was released, many fans started a petition with the desire to have Captain Marvel recast and Brie Larson fired. Luckily, that did not happen, and she is still an important part of the Marvel franchise, with ‘The Marvels’ being released on November 10, 2023.

Brie did not always get along with other colleagues from the Marvel franchise

After ‘Captain Marvel,’ the movie released soon after was ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and new problems followed for Brie. She was a part of a large group of famous stars and popular superheroes now. However, many considered her to be still a ‘freshman’ among veterans in the Marvel franchise like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, and many others.

On several occasions, Brie’s interaction with other actors during interviews was strange, awkward, and tense. Her behavior in those instances left an impression that she thinks she’s better than others and had some condescending comments where it was obvious that her colleagues were annoyed. So, once the fans noticed that, they also got the impression that Brie was the one messing with the good vibe among their beloved Avengers.

Some fans also think that the role made once smiling and caring actress into an egotistical and arrogant person, at least while talking about her character in Marvel Universe.

Brie also tends to leave strange comments on straightforward questions. For example, when asked how long she plans to play Captain Marvel, she sarcastically responded: ”I don’t know, does anyone want me to do it again?” She is clearly aware of all the bad comments, but it is unclear how she really feels about playing the role many actresses would be thrilled to have.

The upcoming ‘The Marvels’ movie may bring Brie and her character more praise and approval from the fans because the movie looks promising and entertaining, and it will again have female characters in the main role. Despite the differences, there might be between Brie and the fans and Brie and the other Marvel cast, she is still a talented actress that deserves respect for her work and craft.
