‘X-Men ’97’ is an upcoming animated TV series on Disney+ created by Beau DeMayo. It serves as a revival of the beloved ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ from the 1990s, continuing the story from where the original series left off. Produced by Marvel Studios Animation, the show has DeMayo as the head writer. Today, the first trailer for the continuation of the beloved series dropped and we’ve gotten a first look at the legacy costumes and some legendary mutants, Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine, Gambit, and many more.
‘X-Men ’97’ features several original cast members reprising their roles, such as Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, and Alyson Court. Discussions about reviving the 1990s animated series began in 2019, and ‘X-Men ’97’ was officially announced in November 2021 with Marvel Studios Animation and Beau DeMayo’s involvement. This project marks Marvel Studios’ return to producing X-Men content following the studio’s reacquisition of the film and television rights to the characters.
Regarding the plot, we know that the series will revolve around primarily Wolverine & Storm after they try to continue the X-Men Legacy following, Xavier’s death.
‘X-Men ’97’ also marks the first fully-produced Marvel Studios project outside of the MCU, and the second overall after ‘Spidey and his Amazing Friends.’However, despite this distinction, the theme from ‘X-Men ’97’ has been quoted in the scores of two MCU projects: ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ during Professor X’s appearance, and in ‘Ms. Marvel’ during the episode ‘No Normal’ when Bruno mentions finding a “mutation” in Kamala’s DNA.
The show is set to arrive on Disney+ on March 20, 2024, and will consist of 10 episodes. The second season has already been announced to be in development. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
