Disney+ is gearing up to debut a fresh take on Spider-Man with the animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, premiering on January 29, 2025. Marvel Entertainment recently dropped the first trailer, igniting debate over its bold reinterpretations, particularly the race-swapping of iconic characters Harry and Norman Osborn, who are portrayed as Black men in this version.
While X-Men ’97 was largely praised despite some updates to its classic formula, Disney+ seems to be pushing the envelope further with this Spider-Man reboot. The trailer features a hip-hop remix of the classic Spider-Man theme, a clear nod to attracting a younger, more diverse audience while keeping longtime fans intrigued.
The story showcases Peter Parker in a homemade costume reminiscent of the Scarlet Spider, collaborating with Norman Osborn to design a cutting-edge, tech-infused Spider-Man suit.
The trailer unveils an entirely revamped supporting cast, offering a fresh departure from the classic Spider-Man comics, as you can see for yourself:
As you can see, the supporting cast differs significantly from the classic Spider-Man stories we’re familiar with. However, the identities and roles of these characters in the plot remain unclear, so this aspect may not present any issues, despite what some outspoken “fans” might claim.
Among the changes, the most notable is the race-swapping of both Norman and Harry Osborn, accompanied by significant updates to their appearances.
Norman’s collaboration with Peter Parker, while a departure in tone, doesn’t contradict established canon. Meanwhile, Harry’s new look (beyond the race-swap) has sparked speculation among fans that he could be portrayed as an LGBTQ+ character.
While X-Men ’97 stayed closer to its original character designs, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man appears to be taking bolder creative risks, which could ultimately benefit the series as it evolves.
You might recall that X-Men ’97 encountered some pushback over certain (arguably controversial) updates, and it seems the upcoming Spider-Man series could face similar reactions from a segment of the fanbase due to its changes.
